Senior Independent Thesis

The Broadwater Academy Senior Independent Thesis (SIT) strives to showcase the abilities of all graduating students in the form of a twenty page research paper and its presentation and public defense before a jury of faculty. The senior produces a hypothesis and works closely with a mentor specializing in the subject of the student’s choice. He or she is evaluated for adherence to a research schedule as well as convincing interaction with the selected mentor, including periodic meetings with selected members of the jury. Semester One’s evaluation reflects the student’s ability to follow the prescribed schedule.

The oral defense and presentation of the paper takes place after spring break (S2) and follows a complete draft and rewrite procedure. The student is evaluated for the articulate analysis contained in the paper (60%) and the persuasive effectiveness of the presentation (40%). Four core faculty members grade the written portion by committee; the defense/presentation is marked by three members from the core jury and the mentor. The top five overall theses will be acknowledged at Graduation, where Senior Awards for ‘Best Paper’ and ‘Best Presentation’ will also be presented.

With the successful completion of the Senior Independent Thesis, students conclude their Broadwater education prepared for the rigors of collegiate academics.
