Broadwater and VMRC Partner to Educate Safe Boaters

In its second year, a partnership between Virginia Marine Resources Commission and Broadwater

Academy has strengthened the future of boating on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. All of grade six

students at Broadwater have completed safe boating education and certification through an on-

campus program with staff from VMRC over the last thirteen weeks of the spring semester. Students

have learned about basic components of a vessel, safe operation of waterways as well as many

concepts of marine conservation. This certification is a lifetime certification with the Commonwealth.

Head of School, Fran Ryan, welcomed the audience at the certification ceremony expressing how

honored Broadwater is to be the only school in the Commonwealth offering this education

programming and reinforcing how the School honors its place on the Eastern Shore of Virginia by

offering this type of training. In a separate program with Virginia Division of Wildlife Resources,

Broadwater also offers safe hunting certification.

Broadwater Academy is the premier learning community on the Eastern Shore of Virginia for

pre-K – 12 education.

With a challenging curriculum, talented instructors, and a diverse student body, Broadwater develops

the next generation of respectful, civic-minded leaders and productive citizens.
